When reading, we are transported, as with wings, into the realms of the imagination, into an expanded understanding of ourselves and the world around us, beyond our quotidian existence, beyond what is to what is possible. This piece is a visual ode to the transcendent power of the written word.

Patrons looking up in the library entrance encounter translucent “books”
soaring up into the skylight. Looking at the floor during the day, one sees
the cast of subtle shadows. The placement of the “books” echoes birds in
flight; the open pages, wings.

The sculptures are formed from transparent fiberglass, lightly tinted with
various colors of automotive enamel and complementary-hued interference
pigment. There are 22 sculptures in total, ranging in size from 8”x10” to 18”x24” and suspended from the skylight by thin steel rods.
